No. 38 Whangamumu Harbour
This was our first beach survey of 2018 in a beautiful natural harbour called Whangamumu. This was once used by the whaling industry and the remains of the slipway and the whale processing factory can still be seen here. The clean up here was carried out over a number of small beaches on the north side of the harbour adjacent to the whaling station. We collected a total of 1.3kg of assorted plastics. This was mainly plastic packaging, clothes pegs (blown off visiting boats), bottle tops, straws and balloons. We would estimate that a significant proportion of plastics found originate from visiting boats, which is disappointing.
