No. 40 Peach Grove Bay
Peach Grove Bay is a beautiful bay on the South side of Great Mercury Island, New Zealand. There are two beaches here and this is the smaller one of the two. The beach is only about 80m long but I found 52 pieces of polystyrene amongst other things. This stuff is almost impossible to clean up once it is in the environment. It's light and so blows everywhere, it's fragile and so breaks up easily, it floats and so carries for miles. So why do we allow it to be used in the marine environment as fishing floats, boat fenders and cool boxes for storing fish.
The other interesting find was a very worn thong (flip flop). Take a look at the third picture above. This is what happens to your lost footwear in the ocean. It gradually breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces creating and even greater hazard to marine life.
