No. 31 Gap Beach, Lindeman Island
Lindeman Island lies at the centre of the popular Whitsunday group of islands. There is a resort in the south of the island but this beach is on the northern side of the island and looks to be visited very infrequently. Much of the plastic had clearly been in the environment for some time. The fifth, sixth and seventh photos show how brittle some of this plastic is. The shots show what happened as I tried to pick up the plastic. It disintegrated like a delicate eggshell. There were eight thongs and fourteen plastic bottles recovered from this beach in less than an hour. Some of the plastic clearly had it's origins in China and Indonesia. The debris was collected and data input to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative database.
